Zhuge Liang's "Admonitions to My Son": A gentleman's conduct is to cultivate oneself in tranquility and to cultivate virtue in frugality. Without being indifferent, one cannot clarify one's ambition; without being tranquil, one cannot achieve far-reaching goals. Learning requires tranquility, and talent requires learning. Without learning, one cannot broaden one's talent; without ambition, one cannot complete learning. If one is lax and lazy, one cannot be diligent; if one is reckless and impatient, one cannot control one's character. As the years and time pass, one's will and energy fade away, and one becomes withered and out of touch with the world. It is sad to stay in a poor house, and what can be done?
吕蒙正 《寒窑赋》: 天有不测风云,人有旦夕祸福。蜈蚣百足,行不及蛇;雄鸡两翼,飞不过鸦。马有千里之程,无骑不能自往;人有冲天之志,非运不能自通。盖闻:人生在世,富贵不能淫,贫贱不能移。
Lü Mengzheng's "Han Yao Fu": The weather is unpredictable, and people are subject to misfortunes and blessings at any time. A centipede has a hundred feet, but it cannot walk as fast as a snake; a rooster has two wings, but it cannot fly as fast as a crow. A horse can travel a thousand miles, but it cannot go without a rider; a person can have a lofty ambition, but it cannot achieve it without luck. It is said that in this world, wealth and honor cannot corrupt one, and poverty and humbleness cannot change one.
弘一法师 : 处难处之事愈宜宽,处难处之人愈宜厚,处至急之事愈宜缓。以冰霜之操自励,则品日清高;以穹窿之量容人,则德日广大;以切磋之谊取友,则学问日精;以慎重之行利生,则道风日远。
